Emerging Technologies

Image
I like to find articles that are more on the positive side of information since the world is more focused on the negative or the problems without really talking about realistic solution. The article I chose had 12 emerging technologies but I'm going to mention my favorite.  Shannon Yee, an assistant professor at Georgia Tech, and his group are using nuclear waste to produce electricity. His project is funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and is working with Stanford University to make this device work. Researchers from Stanford have a similar photovoltaic devices expect the one that Yee is using high energy electrons emitted from nuclear byproducts.  Photovoltaic is relating to the production of electric current at the junction of two substances exposed to light according to Oxford dictionary. Basically what solar panels are and do. Betavoltaic is relating to an electric current that is generated by beta particles (electrons) emitted from a radioactive...

First extinct animal

Image
Michelle Almazan 9-29-2020                 Tecopa Pupfish, a native of the hot springs of the Mojave Desert, the first animal declared extinct under the provisions of the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Fun fact, the last Tecopa Pupfish was seen in 1970. The Tecopa Pupfish is about 1.5 to 3 inches in an adult size, it became extinct because of the drying out of water, climate change and the introduction of fish to its natural habitat. This fish would hide from its predators by digging into the mud or soil and they would also do that to keep warm from the hot and cold temperature.

Desertification

Image
Desertification is a type of land use in drylands in which biological productivity is lost due to natural processes or induced by human activities whereby fertile areas become increasingly arid. It is the spread of arid areas caused by a variety of factors, such as climate change particularly the current Global warming and overexploitation of soil as a result of human activity As global temperatures rise and the human population expands, more of the planet is vulnerable to desertification, the permanent degradation of land that was once arable. While interpretations of the term desertification vary, the concern centers on human-caused land degradation in areas with low or variable rainfall known as drylands: arid, semi-arid, and sub-humid lands . These drylands account for more than 40 percent of the world's terrestrial surface area.

Land Use

Many deep ocean canyons around the globe are believed to be affected, including some of the planet's deepest. In the depths of the Mediterranean Sea there’s trash from landfills. The harm of plastic doesn't stop in the ocean. Scientists are investigating the long-term effects of plastic pollution on human health from consuming toxic pollutants in fish and other marine life. Landfills are also a big thing where I grew up huge hills and mountains filled with waste but most would pass it by due to them being planted over with layers of grass. Extinction

Image
Michelle Almazan            Extinction is one of the many important and bad things going on around the world.  Some major causes of extinction are habitat loss, an introduced species, pollution, population growth, and overconsumption. Scientist estimate that 150-200 species of plant, insect, bird and mammal become extinct every 24 hours. Researchers estimated that humans have driven at least 680 vertebrate species to extinction, including the woolly mammoth.           Some ways that animals go extinct are that they are hunted, their homes are torn down or they have no food. It all starts with us , we could prevent animal extinction by stopping oil rigs in the middle of the ocean, no more illegal hunting, prevent forest fire and floods. Interesting fact, more than 10,000 animals die from hunting all over the world. Extinction is real important to me because as species disappear, infectious diseases rise...

Energy and Technology

Image
I read an article about discovering new magnetoelectric effect that intrigued me. Magnetoelectric effect is when electricity is produced by changing the magnetic fields in a vicinity of electric conductors. This effect is important for how the world functions now for example, this effect happens is with power lines. Power lines generate magnetic field into a generator that produces electricity. It has become an importance in technology like finding ways of data storage which is huge concept for everyone.  Physicist have discovered an object that has this effect that they did not think would work; which is a crystal. I was actually surprised myself that crystals can have that effect and so were the Physicists. They did many experiment on how crystals work like seeing how powerful it was and how to get the max energy. They came to find out that it doesn't matter too much about strength but it is all in the direction of the polarization, which is usually linear but with crystals it is...

Land Use Issues

One of the most important things in human daily activity is oxygen because without it we wouldn't be alive right now. trees give us oxygen and life but we're killing them slowly as we chop 7 billion trees down yearly in the united states. People are chopping down trees like there's no tomorrow to make some money killing wildlife on a day to day basis. This issue has been going on for years and even causing certain species to become endangered for example the chimpanzee. People also don't realize that deforestation causes climate change and can also cause flooding due to missing trees and the death of animals due to missing homes. people have to come to the realization of how important it is to protect our plants and animals witch bring life to our world. Another huge issue land faces to this day are fracking, fracking is when holes are drilled into the earth for gas and oil. This issue causes groundwater and surface water to be poisoned.  the emissions of the gasses rel...
